Cold keeps Minn. wind turbines from spinning

Wind turbines placed in cities across Minnesota to generate power aren’t working because of the cold temperatures.

The Minnesota Municipal Power Association bought 11 turbines for $300,000 each from a company in Palm Springs, Calif.

Special hydraulic fluid designed for colder temperatures was used in the turbines, but it’s not working, so neither are the turbines.

There is a plan to heat the fluid, but officials must find a contractor to do the work.

  1. Allegheny Front Alliance says:

This just does not get any better than this….Watch this video. It really is a ‘No Spin Zone’

    1) The city is going to have to sue the contractor.
    2) The city hopes to have the turbines spin in the next few months.
    3) What a great deal, $300,000 to power 35 homes. Do the math folks! If you want to put money into the economy, try hiding $300,000 dollars in Easter gggs at the nearest Walmart parking lot. I promise Easter Egg money will spin faster through the economy than this wind project.

    4) Can’t wait till summer, the headlines will read: tory will “Thin oil used in the summer cause the motor bearings to burn out”

I wonder if this new radio story material for Lake Wobegon? The folks at the Chatterbox Cafe will be talking about this folly all winter.
